Psylonian |
The Psylonian Defectors are a humanoid race once living as subjects to the Klingon Empire near the Kzinti-Klingon border. During the Third Klingon-Kzinti war the Psylonian home planet was nearly destroyed in a Kzinti attack. The Klingon Empire believed all inhabitants had been killed and quickly forgot about their former subjects as the war raged on. In fact about 10% of the Psylonian population survived the Kzinti drone bombardment by seeking shelter in deep bunkers. Using the opportunity to escape their Klingon oppressors, the Psylonians assembled the remaining population into transport ships and left the dying planet in search of a new home world, taking with them Kzinti drone technology leftover from the war zone. The transport ships eventually found a habitable planet in a virtually unknown sector just outside of Klingon territory near the Tholian Holdfast. The planet proved to be rich in a rare metal that the Psylonians used to build their ships. This metal is ultra-dense providing for excellent armour at the expense of added weight to Psylonian warships, which are all based the hulls from the transport ships used to escape from Klingon territory. The Defectors spent a few years upgrading their drone technology until they had perfected it. (All Psylonian ships use C-Racks). This new minor power still lacked any sort of heavy weapon other than drones, but changed that after a few encounters with Tholian explorers who had ventured outside the Holdfast. Although the Psylonians lost half of their fleet in the Psylonian-Tholian skirmishes (they only had 6 ships to begin with) they managed to capture a Tholian cruiser and exploit some of it's technology. The Web Devices were found to be of an extremely alien technology and could not be reproduced, but the brilliant scientists of the Psylonians were able to use the Web Caster as a working Web Fist. The Psylonians then promptly left the Tholians alone, as they didn't wish to risk getting crushed by a fleet that largely outnumbered them. After a few more years the Defectors began to venture along the edge of the galaxy, staying away from the Tholians, and having occasional incidents with the Klingons (who weren't willing to commit any amount of serious resistance to Psylonian presence). Eventually the Psylonians came into contact with an aggressive race of intergalactic origin known as the Daetharians. Although Psylonian vessels were superior in performance to the Daetharians, the occasional lost battle was devastating as the Defectors had very few ships to begin with. After design improvements in Daetharian ships began to even out the odds, the Psylonians decided it was best to not interfere with the mysterious aliens. Increased galactic tension during the General War forced the Psylonians to produce warships in larger numbers in case of attack, although in fact most major powers were unaware of the Defectors existence, and of the few that have encountered them none know the location of their adopted home world. |
